The Industrial Steel Drum Institute (ISDI) is a trade association that represents manufacturers of new steel drums in North America. Its mission is to promote the interests of its members through government relations, technical research, education and information exchange, media relations, and marketing programs. ISDI represents the industry before federal agencies and the U.S. Congress, acts as liaison with other industry groups and individual corporations, and plays an active role with international organizations, including the U.N. Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Through ISDI’s affiliation with international organizations, the interests of ISDI members are represented worldwide.
In 1944, 26 steel drum manufacturers banded together to form the Steel Shipping Container Institute (SSCI). In 2003, SSCI teamed up with three industrial packaging trade associations to co-found the Industrial Packaging Alliance of North America (IPANA), a federation that is now comprised of SSCI’s successor the Industrial Steel Drum Institute, along with the Plastic Drum Institute, the Rigid Intermediate Bulk Container Association, and the International Fiber Drum Institute. These trade associations are known as IPANA affiliates. IPANA addresses domestic regulatory issues that affect industrial packagings and acts as a management umbrella. IPANA consolidates the former meetings of its affiliates into more cohesive, cost-effective events, where each affiliate meets to discuss business and technical needs, and learn about evolving political, regulatory and technical issues.
The International Confederation of Drum Manufacturers (ICDM) is an alliance between ISDI and similar organizations in Europe and Asia. As a sanctioned observer at meetings of the U.N. Sub-Committee on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, ICDM is a universal voice for makers of steel drums, providing expertise on packaging proposals that influence regulations. ICDM’s member organizations – ISDI, Syndicat Européen de L’industrie des Fûts en Acier (SEFA) in Europe and the Asia Oceanic Steel Drum Association (AOSD) have also recently collaborated on marketing and promoting steel drums.
TRANSCAERSM educates first responders on how to prepare for and respond to incidents that involve the transportation of hazardous materials. ISDI has been a TRANSCAER sponsor since 2018, and through the sponsorship educates first responders on how to manage transportation incidents that involve steel drums by in-person training, webinars, and videos.
