Shipment of a hazardous material requires proper classification of the contents of a package and proper selection of packaging, marking and labeling, as well as verification of closure instructions. Your packaging supplier is an important resource for answering questions related to compliance with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations’ hazardous materials regulation.
Occasionally, companies and shippers need additional assistance in order to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Material Regulations. In order to help facilitate the compliance process, the DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHSMA) has established an information center. You may reach the hazardous materials information line by calling 1.800.467.4922 or 1.202.366.4488. The line is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. You may also reach a hazardous materials professional via email at [email protected].
Because the DOT’s hazardous materials line fields hundreds of calls each week, they have started to post frequently asked questions on Twitter. You may participate by following PHSMA on Twitter at @PHMSA_DOT and checking for tweets with hashtag #HazmatQs every Friday.
